Cebu Pacific gets the green light to fly to US destinations

        The United States Department of Transportation has approved the request of budget airline Cebu Pacific for authority to fly to trust territories Guam and Saipan as well as core US destinations Honolulu, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

        US authorities also made available four more destinations to Cebu Pacific, which will be determined at a later date, according to a Cebu Pacific representative.

        "This November, we received approval from the Department of Transportation for authority to fly to the US, subject to the conditionality that we wet-lease aircraft from an American carrier, or an airline leasing company in a Category 1 country," Alex Reyes, Cebu Pacific long-haul division general manager, noted in an e-mail to GMA News Online Wednesday.

        In 2008, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) placed the Philippines under Category 2 status for failing to comply with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.

        Thus, Cebu Pacific must have a wet-lease agreement from a FAA Category 1 country or an American carrier to fly into the US and its territories.

        A wet-lease agreement refers to transactions between airlines in which the leasing company provides the aircraft as well as crewmembers, maintenance, and other services to the lessee, according to BusinessDictionary.com.

        "We continue to work with the government so the Philippines gets upgraded to Category 1 status from Category 2, so we will be able to fly our own aircraft using our own crew to points in the US," said Reyes.

        Cebu Pacific applied with US authorities last Oct. 17 to fly to Guam, Saipan, Honolulu, San Francisco, Los Angeles and four more additional points in the US.

        The airline told the US Transportation Department it intends to commence scheduled flights to the US in April 2013. — VS, GMA News
